Kettell has been in existence since 2005 and became a member of FENSA in 2007 when our business, originally created for trade supply, began installing windows and doors across Leicester and Leicestershire.
At the time FENSA was the only competent person scheme in existence for the industry & has continued to be at the forefront of industry standards.
What is FENSA?
FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme) is a government-authorised scheme that monitors building regulation compliance for replacement windows and doors.
What Does FENSA Cover?
FENSA covers the replacement of external windows, doors, roof windows and roof lights in your home, against the relevant Building Regulations set by the UK Government.
Note; the property must be sited on its original footprint, and the use and size of rooms mustn’t be altered.
What Doesn’t FENSA Cover?
FENSA doesn’t cover the installation of windows and doors in new conservatories, porches, new builds, new extensions, repairs (where frame not included) and commercial properties. Work’s of this nature will either be exempt from building regulations, or require a building notice.
FENSA requires all its members, including Kettell to renew their membership annually. Once renewed, companies are then provided with a registration number, unique to each company.
This number is registered onto FENSA’s website, allowing anyone to see which installers have this certification.
The membership requires regular independent inspections for building regulations compliance, so FENSA can maintain confidence in the industry.
It also requires that at least one team member per install holds a valid MTC: Mandatory Technical Competence card. This is valid for three years at a time. This card demonstrates that a construction worker or installer has the skills to meet Building Regulations.
Further to this, two members of our team conduct our onsite surveys, therefore they hold dual cards that cover this competency also & their inspections incorporate both elements.
The membership allows for Kettell to register a replacement window or door installation on behalf of the homeowner which then produces a FENSA Certification for the work carried out.
The FENSA certificate:
✅Confirms compliance with building regulations
✅Shows your installation’s energy efficient
✅Ensures it’s registered with the Local Council
✅Verifies your installer’s guarantee is insured
✅Essential when selling the property
You can only get a FENSA certificate with a FENSA Approved Installer.
It’s proof your installation:
✅Complies with Building Regulations
✅Is registered with the local council
✅Is backed by guarantee insurance
So why is it an important consideration to me when I am looking to replace my windows & doors?
Proof of a job done right!
The accreditation to a competent person scheme is important because it ensures that the installers have a required competency and expertise in what service they are offering. It should go some way to ensuring a certain level of quality & capability to do what you require.
As a homeowner it’s actually your responsibility to register replacement window and door installations with your local council. BUT… if you choose a FENSA Approved Installer we’ll do this for you! Saving you both time, effort & money.
On registration you will receive a FENSA certificate . You can only get a FENSA certificate with a FENSA Approved Installer.
When it comes to selling your property, if you have had replacement windows or doors installed since April 1st 2002 it is a legal requirement to supply a compliance certificate, as it demonstrates compliance with building regulations.
Selling a house without a FENSA certificate could delay the sale, raise concerns with potential buyers, and potentially lead to legal issues if the installation is found to be non-compliant.
How do I check if a window & door installer is part of an approved scheme?
Many of the compliance providers including FENSA have a website where you can search for approved providers.
As a FENSA approved installer we are proud to display our certificate in our showroom, display our logo across our website & installation vehicles. Any company that is registered to a competency scheme is likely to do the same. If unsure, just ask them for their proof.
If your installer doesn’t mention that you’re responsible and doesn’t offer a FENSA certificate or other building regulations compliance certificate, you’ll need to pay for an inspection by building control.
Being part of such a scheme takes time, effort & investment from Kettell but it’s in our DNA to ensure we are delivering a compliant and quality service to our customers. We only hope more providers would do the same!
